Essential DIY Tips for Painting Your Car

Use Quality Paint
This should be a no-brainer, but it is vital that your paint of choice isn’t of poor quality. Any great job that you think you’d done will quickly deteriorate if the paint is basement bargain and low quality. Choose the correct color
Call your local automotive dealer and give him your vin #. This will enable the dealer to give you the exact color name. Then, go to our color chart and choose your color from among 148 contemporary OEM aerosol colors.
Prep the painting area
Thoroughly clean to ensure your painting area is free of dust and dirt that could easily ruin your new finish. Be sure to paint in a well-ventilated, dry space. The quality of the finished product is directly related to the amount of prep done, so set yourself up well and don’t cut any corners when prepping.
Prep the painting surface
If you’re painting the outside of the car, thoroughly wash and remove any rust. If you’re painting the interior, thoroughly vacuum and shampoo all cloth upholstery with a damp cloth. Dust and dirt can mix with the paint causing an uneven finish. Use 1200 grit wet dry sandpaper and lightly buff all leather surfaces and hard plastics. This step can be eliminated if you are spraying on vinyl, ABS, PC or TPU. When painting hard plastics such as TPO / PP or metal, use # 215 clear adhesion promoter to insure proper adhesion. This step can be eliminated if you are painting leather, vinyl, ABS, PVC or TPU.
Soak Can for 15 Seconds
The hot summer days will dry the pigment in mid air and will create a powdery rough surface. To prevent this type of dry spray, place aerosol in ice bath and spin for 15 seconds. This will get the boiling point in the aerosol cooler and make the paint flow better.
